Lathering shampoo into the scalp with fingertips

You've Been Washing Your Hair Wrong

Most of us were taught to wash hair. Almost nobody was taught to wash the scalp — and that is where hygiene actually happens.

Shampoo is scalp care, not hair care. The lengths of your hair are already dead protein; the living part of the story is the skin the hair grows out of. When shampoo is piled onto the lengths and only rinsed past the roots, the scalp never truly gets cleaned.

The habits that quietly work against you

  • Water that is too hot, which leaves the scalp tight and reactive.
  • Shampoo applied to the ends first, so the scalp gets whatever is left over.
  • Scrubbing with nails instead of massaging with fingertips.
  • Rinsing for a few seconds, leaving residue that builds up over weeks.
  • Washing less often in humid weather because hair 'still looks fine'.

None of this is a personal failing — it is simply what most of us copied from the people who washed our hair when we were small. The fix is a method, not a new product.

Key takeaway: if your scalp feels oily, itchy or heavy soon after washing, look at how you wash before you look at what you wash with.

Dr. Zulaikha Hanif's Clean–Cure–Grow approach starts here for a reason. Clean comes first because a properly cleansed scalp is what lets everything after it work.

Rinsing a lathered scalp under running water

The Correct Method of Washing Your Scalp

Our own four-step wash method: Prepare, Apply, Massage, Rinse — the way we teach it in the studio.

This is the method we walk every client through. It takes around five minutes and it is the single change that makes the biggest difference to how a scalp feels.

  1. Step 1

    Prepare

Wet the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water — never hot. Hot water strips the scalp's natural barrier and can leave it dry and reactive. Let the water run long enough that the scalp itself is properly soaked, not just the hair.

  2. Step 2

    Apply

Put the shampoo on your SCALP, not the lengths. Work in sections — front, crown, sides, nape — so every part gets attention. The lengths are cleaned by the lather that rinses through them.

  3. Step 3

    Massage

Massage with fingertips for two to three minutes, using small circular movements. No nails. This lifts sweat, oil and dead skin, and helps maintain circulation at the follicle.

  4. Step 4

    Rinse

Rinse completely, longer than feels necessary. Leftover product is one of the most common causes of residue buildup, itch and that heavy feeling by end of day.

Key takeaway: lukewarm water, shampoo on the scalp, two to three minutes of fingertip massage, and a rinse that is longer than you think.

If your scalp is congested, a pre-wash step once or twice a week can support the process — but only after the basic method is consistent.
